I'm a hula hoop act, vaudeville performer, street artist, freelance writer -- and a woman who has realized that my various talents do not always benefit me financially. But NOT living according to these gifts is worse than being on food stamps. We all add to the world in our own unique way, and this is my way. I sometimes doubt what I do (especially when I have $18 in the bank). But I continuously get feedback from people who have been touched by my classes, my shows, my words -- and I honestly feel I am helping the world MORE by creating, even if it involves taking chances. What have I contributed to life on earth? A few months ago, a woman whose partner committed suicide wrote to tell me that seeing my show inspired her to get back in touch with the part of herself that laughs and feels joy. We had a really profound exchange (that also helped me). I have yet to meet this woman in person, and I never would've connected with her at all had she not been in the audience of a Washington show. In addition, there's the San Francisco dad who wrote to tell me he's the primary caretaker for his son -- and had an uplifting break from his exhaustion by happening across my street show. For that morning, he felt happy. And there's the student recovering from a car accident who realized that, although she didn't have enough balance to waist hoop, she could arm hoop like a ninja. The Chinese mainstream media, which at ordinary times are strictly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Propaganda Department also showed an active attitude. Various gray tricks have been carried out in relation to the forbidden topic. There are remarks saying that a top-level CCP internal fighting is involved behind these normally forbidden reports. What's more, the power struggle has come to the front rather than being kept underground. Ordinarily, Chinese media is forbidden to report scandals of high-level CCP officials. However, the recent Wang Lijun event seemed to have broken this taboo. The mainstream Chinese newspaper crossed the "red line" one after another. The event was reported in either direct or obscure ways, which led to imaginations go wild. On January 10th, all major newspapers in Beijing wrote about CCP's investigation on Wang Lijun in their headline news. These include the Beijing News, the Beijing Times, and the Beijing Evening News. Besides citing Xinhua, Beijing News published an abstract on its front page and a detailed report in its "Important News" section. Authored by CCP United Front's Work Department deputy, Zhu Weiqun, it warns that CCP members can't be religious. From the society perspective this indicates, that the CCP belief system has been precarious. Scholars said, CCP's rejection of other religions just reflects its own religious nature. Reporter: In the article, Zhu Weiqun wrote that the phenomenon of CCP members participating in religious activities has increased. And some CCP members actually became religious believers. CCP owned media reproduced the article intact, and echoed the criticism simultaneously. But the people in mainland China have already become accustomed to read the official statements "behind the article." Netizens wrote that at present, CCP members' worshiping Buddha and God has become a common phenomenon. The leaders also often go to temples to worship. Scholars commented that the CCP forced people to vote. This scared voters, making them realize that they cannot express their true opinions. Scholars also pointed out other shortcomings in the CCP's election process. magazine, Xu Yaotong, director of the research department at the China National Administration College, urged the CCP election committee to use democratic voting norms. He pointed out that the majority of CCP members don't have real democratic voting rights, which, among other things, makes it impossible to vote out once-trusted leaders. Xu Yaotong cited that the CCP's constitution dictates that elections should employ "secret ballots," but the CCP's different levels' rules have created many distortions in the voting process, making it hard for voters to freely express their opinions. The Organization Bureau of the CCP's Organization Ministry published a "Party Election Manual" in 2001. It described "secret ballot" as a means for voters to cast their vote without marking their name on the ballot. They, however, are required to vote in person.
